10 MeV high-power electron beam irradiation for industrial applications

High-energy electron beam irradiations are carried out for Risø HDRL at the Sterigenics facility in Espergærde, Denmark, using an IBA Rhodotron accelerator operating at 10 MeV. The facility provides industrial-scale irradiation capabilities with well-defined and reproducible beam conditions.

The accelerator typically operates at beam powers around 80 kW, enabling irradiation over a wide dose range relevant for radiation processing applications. The facility is used for characterization of Risø calorimeters and aluminum energy wedges, as well as for dose mapping and dosimetry system validation.

The Sterigenics facility plays a central role in the 10 MeV electron beam validation and training activities at Risø, including irradiation for dosimetry system calibration, as well as Operational Qualification (OQ) and Performance Qualification (PQ) exercises. Dosimeters are typically irradiated in dedicated Risø-designed phantoms, ensuring that dosimeters and calorimeters receive consistent and well-defined doses under controlled conditions.
