Traceable irradiation of dosimeters and samples using gamma and electron beam sources
We provide controlled irradiation of dosimeters and samples to specified absorbed doses using a range of gamma and electron beam irradiation facilities, supporting dosimetry calibration, verification, method development and application-specific studies. Irradiations are performed under well-defined and traceable conditions in collaboration with selected industrial facilities:
Co-60 gamma cell irradiation
For Risø HDRL cobalt-60 gamma sources, dose rates are traceable to national standards at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), UK. Multiple irradiation geometries and dose-rate ranges are available, with defined irradiation volumes and optional temperature control depending on the facility.
Co-60 free field irradiation
The medical cobalt-60 irradiator (Terabalt T100) provides a fixed horizontal beam with selectable field sizes and a typical dose rate of approximately 1 Gy/min at 100 cm. The facility is used for irradiation of ionization chambers, dosimeters and samples under reproducible reference conditions, with accurate positioning using a motorized XYZ stage.
High-Energy Electron Beam Irradiation – 10 MeV
For high-energy electron irradiations, Risø HDRL collaborates with the industrial 10 MeV electron beam facility at Sterigenics (Denmark). Irradiation is performed using a Rhodotron accelerator, suitable for irradiation of dosimeters and samples up to industrial-scale dimensions. Dosimetry and irradiation procedures follow ISO/ASTM 51649.
Low-Energy (70 keV - 200 keV) Electron Beam Irradiation
Risø HDRL operates a low-energy electron accelerator for irradiation of dosimeters and samples at energies between 70 and 200 keV. The facility supports surface and near-surface irradiation studies under controlled conditions and is operated in accordance with ISO/ASTM 51818 and relevant international guidance.
Medical Linear Accelerator Irradiation
Irradiation can also be performed using a medical linear accelerator (Varian TrueBeam) operated exclusively for non-clinical dosimetry work at DTU Health Tech. The accelerator provides MV photon beams (4–18 MV, including FFF) and electron beams (6–20 MeV) and has high-precision positioning.
