Alanine pellet dosimeters, manufactured by Harwell Dosimeters (UK), are widely recognized for their stability and accuracy in reference dosimetry across both gamma, x-ray, and electron irradiation facilities. Their dose response is based on radiation-induced free radical formation in the alanine matrix, which is quantified using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.
With a dose range of 2 Gy to 100 kGy, alanine dosimeters exhibit minimal energy dependence, excellent stability, near water equivalence, and a well-characterized response. They are particularly well-suited for use in establishing and maintaining traceability to national and international dosimetry standards, making them ideal for calibration, validation, and quality assurance applications.
At Risø HDRL, alanine pellets are used as our reference transfer dosimeter. Calibrations are carried out in accordance with the recommendations of CIRM 29, Guidelines for the Calibration of Dosimeters for Use in Radiation Processing, ensuring consistency and compliance with internationally accepted best practices.
Alanine dosimetry systems are an integral part of many reference dosimetry protocols and serve as a critical tool in ensuring the accuracy and consistency of absorbed dose measurements in industrial radiation processing. They are also used in medical applications, including radiation therapy dosimetry, where high accuracy and tissue equivalence are essential.
